About this Pattern

Half Season Mittens is a clean, functional and timeless half-glove design by Dorte Bak Knitting, created for transitional seasons when you need warmth without sacrificing freedom of movement. The mittens fit comfortably around the hand and feature a ribbed top edge that can be folded down when extra finger mobility is needed, making them ideal for everyday wear, cycling, coffee breaks and outdoor activities.

The mittens are worked from the bottom up on double-pointed needles or circular needles using the Magic Loop method. The design begins with a ribbed cuff, followed by a smooth stockinette hand section and finished with a double rib edge, which provides structure, elasticity and a refined finish. The construction is straightforward and does not require advanced knitting techniques, making Half Season Mittens relatively beginner-friendly—especially with the included video guides.

The pattern is available in sizes (1) 2 (3) 4, corresponding to a flat hand circumference of (16) 18 (20) 22 cm, measured around the palm. It is recommended to choose a size with a negative ease of –1 cm to 0 cm, ensuring the mittens fit snugly and do not loosen excessively with wear.

The mittens are knitted using Pura Lana from Gepard Garn (50 g = 115 m), with a total yarn requirement of (40) 50 (50–60) 75 grams, depending on size.
The calculated meterage per 50 g is approximately 115 m.

Two needle sizes are used: 3 mm and 4 mm needles. The gauge is approximately 20 stitches and 29 rows = 10 x 10 cm in stockinette stitch on 4 mm needles, measured before washing and blocking.

The thumb is shaped using right- and left-leaning increases and placed on hold while the hand is completed. The thumb is then finished separately and bound off with a regular bind off. For the double rib edge at the top, the pattern recommends using Ruke Bind Off for a flexible and elegant finish, though an elastic bind off can also be used as an alternative.

Half Season Mittens is a versatile and practical accessory, combining simple knitting techniques with thoughtful details and everyday usability.

Dorte Bak Knitting

Dorte Bak Knitting was founded in 2018 and has since published patterns in a classic style with "whimsical" details. I grew up among creative women; all the women in my family have sewn, knitted, and created with their hands. Therefore, it felt entirely natural that, at the age of six, I was given my first knitting needles. Even so, it was only later in life that knitting truly captured me—and since then I haven’t been able to let it go.
