About this Pattern
Hending is a modern Icelandic lopapeysa designed by Rakel from Lopamunstur, combining traditional colorwork with a clean, contemporary expression. The sweater is knitted seamlessly in the round from the bottom up, with body and sleeves worked separately before being joined for the decorative yoke. The result is a lightweight yet warm sweater with a refined silhouette and a distinctive Nordic look.
Hending is knitted using Istex Plötulopi, held double throughout the project. Plötulopi is an unspun Icelandic wool that creates an airy and insulating fabric while remaining breathable and comfortable to wear. Each 100 g plate of Plötulopi has a total length of 300 meters, which equals 150 meters per 50 g when held double. The sweater is worked on circular and double-pointed needles in sizes 4 mm and 5 mm, with ribbed edges knitted on smaller needles for a neat and structured finish.
The design features a slim fit and a slightly shorter body length, giving Hending a modern shape that works well for everyday wear. If a looser fit is preferred, sizing up is recommended. The sweater is available in a wide size range from XXS to 5XL, with body widths ranging from approximately 71 cm to 140 cm and sleeve lengths from 42 to 52 cm, depending on size.
The gauge for Hending is 18 stitches and 26 rows per 10 x 10 cm when knitted in the round on 5 mm needles. Since the designer knits quite tightly, knitting a swatch is strongly recommended to ensure the correct gauge and fit. The yoke is worked according to a detailed colorwork chart, with adjustments for different sizes to maintain balance and symmetry in the pattern.
Hending is an excellent project for knitters who enjoy stranded colorwork and want to explore the unique qualities of Icelandic wool. The finished sweater is light, warm, and durable, making it suitable for both outdoor use and everyday wear. With its elegant color palette and timeless design, Hending is a lopapeysa that will remain a cherished part of any hand-knit wardrobe.
