The Heart Vest by Violi is a charming crochet vest for children, combining classic granny squares with playful heart details. The design has a nostalgic handmade feel while the clean shape, delicate edging and small ties at the front give the vest a sweet and contemporary look.
The vest is constructed from 20 granny squares. Ten squares feature a contrasting crocheted heart in the centre, while the remaining ten are worked without hearts. For the heart squares, the heart is crocheted first and the granny square is then worked around it. Once all the squares are finished, they are joined to form the body of the vest before the straps and finishing details are added.
The Heart Vest is crocheted with a 3.5 mm crochet hook using Karen Klarbæk Organic Cotton or a similar yarn. The recommended yarn has a yardage of approximately 170 m per 50 g, equivalent to 340 m per 100 g. The original vest is shown in Warm Nature White with Dark Christmas Red for the contrasting hearts.
The pattern includes sizes 0–1 year (2–3 years) 4–5 years. The finished chest circumference is 49 (60) 71 cm, and the finished length is 24.5 (30.5) 36.5 cm.
You will need 100 (100) 150 g of the main colour and less than 50 g of the contrasting colour.
Rather than a traditional 10 x 10 cm crochet gauge, the gauge is measured by the finished granny square. The squares should measure approximately 5.6 (7) 8.4 cm, depending on the chosen size.
The finishing adds even more character to the design. Decorative edging is worked around the vest and armholes, and four approximately 14 cm long cords are crocheted and attached to the front, creating the pretty bow closures.
