About Kelda Sweater (EN)

Kelda is a classic Icelandic lopapeysa designed by Rakel from Lopamunstur, combining traditional Nordic colorwork with a modern, slim-fitting shape. The sweater is knitted in the round from the bottom up using Istex Álafosslopi, a bulky Icelandic wool that provides exceptional warmth and durability. Kelda is worked with 6 mm and 7 mm needles, with ribbed edges on smaller needles and body, sleeves, and yoke on larger needles.

The design features a beautifully structured colorwork yoke and comes in a wide size range from XXS to 5XL. With a slightly shorter body length and a close fit, Kelda offers a contemporary look while staying true to classic Icelandic knitting traditions. About this Pattern

Kelda is a traditional Icelandic lopapeysa designed by Rakel from Lopamunstur, inspired by classic Nordic colorwork and modern everyday wear. The Kelda sweater is knitted seamlessly in the round from the bottom up and features a striking yoke pattern that highlights the beauty of Icelandic wool. With its slim fit and slightly shorter body length, Kelda offers a contemporary silhouette while staying true to its heritage roots.

The design is knitted using Istex Álafosslopi, a bulky Icelandic wool known for its warmth, durability, and rustic texture. Álafosslopi comes in 100 g skeins with a running length of 100 meters, which corresponds to 50 meters per 50 g. The sweater is worked with circular and double-pointed needles in sizes 6 mm and 7 mm. Rib edges are knitted on 6 mm needles, while the body, sleeves, and colorwork yoke are worked on 7 mm needles to achieve the correct structure and drape.

Kelda is available in a wide size range from XXS to 5XL, making it accessible for many body types. The body circumference ranges from approximately 83 cm to 141.5 cm, and sleeve lengths vary from 42 to 52 cm depending on size. The sweater is designed with a close-fitting body, and if a looser fit is preferred, sizing up is recommended.

The gauge for Kelda is 13 stitches and 18 rows per 10 x 10 cm when knitted in the round on 7 mm needles. Since the designer knits quite tightly, it is advised to knit a swatch and adjust needle size if necessary to match gauge. The colorwork yoke is worked according to charts, with slight variations depending on size to ensure a balanced pattern across all sizes.

Kelda is an ideal project for knitters who enjoy traditional stranded knitting and working with authentic Icelandic wool. The finished sweater is warm, breathable, and perfectly suited for cold climates, outdoor wear, or cozy everyday use. With its bold yet timeless design, Kelda is a sweater that will remain a staple in any hand-knit wardrobe for years to come.

Meet

Knitter from Iceland

I learned to knit at age 6 and fell in love right away. Over the years I’ve mostly focused on traditional Icelandic Wool sweaters (lopapeysa). After a burnout in 2023, knitting became my therapy. I couldn't decide which patterns to knit, so I decided to try and make my own. The process made me feel alive again, and that’s why I haven't stopped since. My inspiration comes from colors, nature, and even music or memories.
