Maude Sweater is an elegant raglan sweater designed by Mrs Funny Valentine and inspired by the American actress Maude Adams. Known for her strength, grace and iconic role as Peter Pan, Maude Adams embodied resilience and imagination – qualities that are reflected in this thoughtfully constructed knitwear design.
The sweater is worked seamlessly from the top down, beginning at the neckline. The upper yoke is shaped using German short rows, creating a smooth and flattering fit across the shoulders without visible seams. Delicate raglan lines run from the neckline to the underarm, giving the sweater a classic structure with refined details.
The Maude Sweater features a timeless silhouette with gently tapered sleeves and a comfortable, feminine fit. Wide cuffs and a classic hem are worked in twisted rib stitch, adding both elasticity and visual depth. The defining feature of the design is the double-layered round collar, also worked in twisted rib, which frames the neckline beautifully. A soft bow, knitted separately and attached at the center front, completes the look and adds a romantic, vintage-inspired touch.
The sweater is knitted using 3.5 mm and 3.0 mm needles and fingering weight yarn. The original design uses Positive Ease Merino Singles, a 100% merino wool yarn with a yardage of 366 meters per 100 grams. Depending on size, approximately 770 to 1940 meters of the main yarn are required. In addition, around 300 meters of contrast yarn are used for the inner collar and bow, originally knitted in Knitting for Olive Soft Silk Mohair. This results in a running length of 183 meters per 50 grams for the main yarn.
The Maude Sweater is available in women’s sizes XS, S (M, L, XL) 2XL, 3XL, 4XL. Finished bust measurements after blocking range from 76 cm to 147 cm, including approximately 2 cm of positive ease, making the sweater suitable for a close yet comfortable fit.
The blocked gauge is 25 stitches and 32 rows per 10 cm in stockinette stitch using the larger needles. Achieving gauge is essential for the collar structure and overall proportions.
