Uddybende information

Silfra Sweater is a beautiful lopapeysa designed by Rakel from Lopamunstur, also known as Knitter from Iceland. This Icelandic sweater pattern is knitted from the bottom up with traditional round yoke construction, showcasing a stunning colorwork design that reflects the natural beauty of Iceland. The sweater uses the classic Icelandic yarn Istex Léttlopi, spun from 100% pure Icelandic wool, which is both warm, durable, and breathable. Each skein of Léttlopi weighs 50 g and has a running length of 100 meters, which equals 200 meters per 100 g and 100 meters per 50 g.

The design calls for circular and double-pointed needles in sizes 4 mm and 5 mm, depending on the section of the sweater. The gauge is 18 stitches and 26 rows per 10 x 10 cm using 5 mm needles, knitted in the round. This ensures a dense yet lightweight fabric that is perfect for outdoor wear.

Silfra comes in a wide range of sizes from XXS to 5XL, making it a versatile design for many body types. The body width ranges from 71 cm in size XXS to 140 cm in size 5XL, while the sleeve length varies from 42 cm to 52 cm depending on the size. The fit is slim with a slightly shorter body length, but knitters who prefer a looser fit are encouraged to size up.

The colorwork in the yoke requires three shades of Léttlopi. The sample is shown in White (0051), Black (0059), and Glacier Blue (1404). Please note that the original photographed version used a special hand-dyed yarn from the Icelandic Handknitting Association, with 1404 Glacier Blue being the closest available commercial shade.

For the smallest size, you will need approximately 6 skeins of Color A (White), 1 skein of Color B (Black), and 1 skein of Color C (Glacier Blue). The largest sizes require up to 12 skeins of Color A, 2 skeins of Color B, and 2 skeins of Color C. This means the yarn usage ranges from around 400 g to 700 g of Léttlopi, depending on the chosen size.

Silfra is an engaging knit that brings together ribbed hems, a classic Icelandic round yoke, and intricate colorwork. The sweater is finished with a high ribbed neckline that can be folded over for extra warmth. With its authentic Icelandic yarn and timeless design, this lopapeysa is the perfect project for knitters who love tradition with a modern twist.

Lidt om

Knitter from Iceland

I learned to knit at age 6 and fell in love right away. Over the years I’ve mostly focused on traditional Icelandic Wool sweaters (lopapeysa). After a burnout in 2023, knitting became my therapy. I couldn't decide which patterns to knit, so I decided to try and make my own. The process made me feel alive again, and that’s why I haven't stopped since. My inspiration comes from colors, nature, and even music or memories.
