Bifukolla Kids Sweater is a beautiful Icelandic lopapeysa design created by Rakel from Lopamunstur, also known as Knitter from Iceland. This charming unisex sweater is knitted from the bottom up with traditional colorwork featured in the round yoke, making it a classic piece of Icelandic knitwear for children. The pattern is written for sizes 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 years, with clear instructions on body width, sleeve length and body length to ensure a perfect fit for every child.
The sweater is knitted in Icewear Saga wool or alternatively in Léttlopi from Ístex. Both yarns come in 50 g skeins with a yardage of 100 meters. This gives a running length of 100 m per 50 g. The recommended knitting tension is 18 stitches and 26 rows per 10 cm on 5 mm needles. Because the sweater is worked in the round, it is advised to knit your gauge swatch in the round to achieve accurate results. Depending on your personal knitting style, you may need to adjust your needle size slightly.
For the Bifukolla kids sweater you will need circular needles of 4 mm and 5 mm in lengths 40 and 60/80 cm depending on the chosen size, as well as double-pointed needles in the same sizes. The ribbing is knitted on 4 mm needles, while the stockinette sections and colorwork are done on 5 mm needles.
The yarn requirement varies depending on the size. Color A, Old Gold 6035, is the main shade and is used for the body and sleeves, ranging from 4 skeins in the smallest size up to 7 skeins in the largest size. Color B, Toffee 9063, is the contrast color used for the yoke pattern, requiring just 1 skein for all sizes. Color C, Snow White 1000, adds brightness to the yoke and uses 1 to 2 skeins depending on size.
The sweater construction begins with ribbing, continues with body and sleeves knitted separately in the round, and then all pieces are joined to work the decorative yoke. After the yoke, a ribbed neckline is added, which can be knitted either 3.5 cm for smaller sizes or longer, up to 7 cm, for the larger sizes. The collar can be folded and sewn down for extra structure.
Finishing involves sewing underarms, weaving in ends, and blocking the sweater gently. With its traditional Icelandic design and warm lightweight wool, Bifukolla kids will keep little ones cozy while showcasing timeless style.
