Hilling Sweater is a timeless Icelandic lopapeysa designed by Rakel from Knitter from Iceland, created with a modern twist on the beloved traditional style. This sweater is worked seamlessly from the bottom up in the round, making it both enjoyable and satisfying to knit. Once the body and sleeves are complete, they are joined together to form the beautifully patterned yoke, where striking colorwork takes center stage. The design is inspired by Nordic heritage, with a delicate interplay of motifs in contrasting shades that bring warmth and character to the finished garment.
The Hilling Sweater is knitted using Icewear Garn Saga Wool, a soft and durable Icelandic yarn that highlights the intricate details of the yoke. Saga Wool comes in 50 g skeins with a running length of approximately 100 meters per 50 g, making it both warm and lightweight. The recommended needle sizes are 4 mm and 5 mm circular needles in lengths of 40, 60, or 80 cm depending on the size, as well as 4 mm and 5 mm double-pointed needles for the sleeves.
The design features a slim fit with a slightly shorter body length, giving it a flattering silhouette. If you prefer a looser fit, it is recommended to choose a larger size. The pattern is available in a wide range of sizes, from XXS to 5XL, with body widths ranging from 71 cm to 140 cm, making it an inclusive garment suitable for all body types. Sleeve lengths vary between 42 and 52 cm depending on the size, and the neckline is finished with a neat 7 cm ribbed collar that can be folded down for extra comfort.
The tension gauge is 18 stitches and 26 rows per 10 x 10 cm using 5 mm needles. As the designer notes, she tends to knit tightly, so you may need to adjust to 4.5 mm or even 4 mm needles to achieve the correct gauge. The sweater uses a combination of colors for the yoke: Colour A Snow White (main color), Colour B Sangria Red (contrast), Colour C Fruit Dove, and Colour D Light Pink. Yarn requirements vary by size, ranging from 6 to 12 skeins of Colour A and smaller amounts of the contrast colors depending on the size chosen.
The Hilling Sweater is not only a practical winter garment but also a statement piece that reflects the beauty of Icelandic knitting traditions. Whether you are knitting it for yourself or as a heartfelt gift, this pattern provides a rewarding project with stunning results.
