Libra Sweater (EN)

Om Libra Sweater (EN)

Libra Sweater is a striking Icelandic sweater designed by Knitter from Iceland. Inspired by the Libra zodiac, this lopapeysa features a slim fit and a shorter body, making it a modern take on a traditional garment. It is knitted bottom up. The recommended yarn is Ístex Léttlopi (50 g = 100 m), a 100% Icelandic wool yarn known for its warmth and lightness. Some sections use Ístex Plötulopi, though knitters can choose to work the entire sweater in Léttlopi. Sizes range from XXS to 5XL, and the sweater is worked on 4 mm and 5 mm needles to achieve the correct gauge of 18 stitches x 26 rows per 10 cm. The Libra Lopapeysa is a perfect project for knitters who love Icelandic traditions and zodiac-inspired designs.

Uddybende information

Libra Sweater is a beautifully designed Icelandic sweater created by Rakel from Knitter from Iceland. This unique design is part of the Zodiac Lopapeysa collection and is inspired by the balance and harmony of the Libra sign. The sweater is knitted from the bottom up with body and sleeves worked in the round before being joined together for the striking colorwork yoke. The pattern features a slim fit and slightly shorter body length, but knitters who prefer a looser fit may simply size up.

The design is worked using the classic Icelandic yarn Ístex Léttlopi, a light and warm yarn spun from 100% Icelandic wool. Each skein weighs 50 g and has a yardage of 100 meters, giving a running length of 100 m per 50 g. For some color sections, the pattern also suggests Ístex Plötulopi, which comes in 100 g unspun plates, but you can easily substitute with Léttlopi for all colors if preferred. The sweater uses a base color in white along with purple tones in light and dark shades, creating a beautiful contrast in the yoke motif.

The pattern is written for ten sizes ranging from XXS to 5XL, making it an inclusive choice for many body types. Body width ranges from 70 cm to 146.5 cm, with sleeve lengths between 42 and 52 cm depending on size. The design has been carefully structured so that the colorwork adapts to each size, ensuring a balanced look regardless of fit.

Knitting is done with circular needles in sizes 4 mm and 5 mm, with corresponding double-pointed needles for sleeves. The ribbing is worked on 4 mm needles, while the body and yoke are knitted on 5 mm needles to achieve the correct gauge. The tension is 18 stitches and 26 rows to 10x10 cm on 5 mm needles, worked in the round. This ensures the sweater has the traditional dense yet airy structure that Icelandic lopapeysur are known for, giving warmth, durability, and breathability.

This pattern is perfect for knitters who enjoy Icelandic traditions and want to create a sweater that is both practical and symbolic. With its timeless design and zodiac inspiration, the Libra Lopapeysa is more than just a garment – it is a wearable piece of heritage.

Lidt om

Knitter from Iceland

I learned to knit at age 6 and fell in love right away. Over the years I’ve mostly focused on traditional Icelandic Wool sweaters (lopapeysa). After a burnout in 2023, knitting became my therapy. I couldn't decide which patterns to knit, so I decided to try and make my own. The process made me feel alive again, and that’s why I haven't stopped since. My inspiration comes from colors, nature, and even music or memories.
