Chloé Dupe Tote is a modern crochet tote bag designed by Mrs Funny Valentine, inspired by the iconic look of a high-end designer bag and reimagined as a handmade statement piece. This project combines mindful crafting with contemporary style, resulting in a practical yet expressive accessory made entirely by hand.
The tote is worked in the round from the bottom up and features an airy mesh body framed by solid bands at the base and top. The structure is completed by crocheting the bottom closed and adding sturdy handles directly onto the bag. One of the most distinctive elements of the design is the optional wire lettering on the front, wrapped in yarn and attached by hand, allowing the maker to personalize the bag with a word, initials, or message of their choice.
Chloé Dupe Tote is crocheted using a 3.5 mm crochet hook and paper yarn. The original design uses Kremke Soul Wool Papyrus, a 100% paper yarn with a yardage of 153 meters per 100 grams. A total of approximately 500 meters of yarn is required, which equals a running length of 76.5 meters per 50 grams. The sample bags are crocheted in the colors Rust and Red.
The finished bag measures approximately 39 cm in width and 41 cm in height after steaming. The handles can be customized in both width and length, with finished handle widths of 4 cm or 3 cm and handle lengths of 74 cm or 60 cm, depending on the chosen variation.
The gauge for this design is 17 stitches and 8 rows per 10 cm in the mesh pattern, worked as 1 double crochet and 1 chain stitch. Achieving gauge ensures the bag keeps its intended shape and structure.
Paper yarn behaves differently than traditional fibers, and gentle steam blocking is an essential part of the process to smooth the fabric and stabilize the stitches.
