Uddybende information
María Shawl is a poetic and expressive triangular shawl designed by Mrs Funny Valentine and inspired by the Spanish philosopher María Zambrano. Zambrano believed that the most worthy task of thought is to bring light into the darkness of the human heart – a philosophy that forms the emotional and conceptual foundation of this design.
The María Shawl is a journey told in stitches. It begins at the very center of the shawl, shaped like a small pentagon, symbolizing a spark of light. From there, the design grows outward in concentric rounds, gradually expanding into a shallow triangular shawl. As the fabric unfolds, colors and textures interact to reflect the balance between light and darkness, reminding us of our ability to bring warmth and understanding into the lives of others.
The shawl is worked using a two-color slip-stitch pattern that creates striking graphic contrasts while remaining soft and flexible. Increases are worked concentrically to form a star-shaped inner structure, adding depth and architectural interest. After completing the center, stitches are picked up and the two shawl wings are worked separately, shaping the final triangular form.
An outer striped border enhances the three-dimensional effect of the pattern and adds visual rhythm to the design. The shawl is finished with an elegant i-cord edge and an optional delicate crochet trim, which softens the geometric structure and adds a subtle romantic touch.
María Shawl is knitted using 4.5 mm needles and DK weight yarn held single. The original design uses dLana La Madrilana DK, a 100% merino wool yarn with a yardage of 235 meters per 100 grams. A total of approximately 460 meters of yarn is required, using two contrasting colors of around 230 meters each. This corresponds to a running length of 118 meters per 50 grams.
Finished measurements after blocking are approximately 144 cm in width, 85 cm in wingspan, and 40 cm in depth. The blocked gauge is 21 stitches and 38 rows per 10 cm in the María stitch pattern.
María Shawl is suitable for intermediate knitters who enjoy thoughtful construction, colorwork without carrying floats, and designs with strong narrative depth. The result is a meaningful accessory that combines structure, softness, and light.
