Gersemi Kids sweater is a charming Icelandic lopapeysa designed by Rakel from Lopamunstur, also known as Knitter from Iceland. This traditional yet modern children’s sweater is knitted in the round from the bottom up, featuring a beautiful colorwork yoke that makes it a true statement piece. The design is worked in Istex Léttlopi, a classic Icelandic wool yarn that comes in 50 g skeins with a running length of 100 meters. This means the yarn has a length of 200 meters per 100 g, or 100 meters per 50 g skein, making it both warm and lightweight.
The sweater is available in ten children’s sizes, with body widths ranging from 56.5 cm to 84 cm and body lengths from 20 cm to 38 cm, making it suitable for a wide age span. The sleeves vary from 22 cm to 40 cm in length, ensuring a comfortable fit for growing children. The design is knitted on 4 mm and 5 mm circular needles, with the smaller size used for ribbing and the larger for the main body and colorwork. Double-pointed needles in the same sizes are used for the sleeves.
The recommended tension is 18 stitches and 26 rows to 10 x 10 cm on 5 mm needles, worked in the round. As with many Icelandic designs, it is advised to knit a swatch in the round to achieve the most accurate gauge. The sweater requires multiple colors of Léttlopi. In the original sample, white (0051) was used as the main color (Color A), paired with grape (9432), pink (1412), and glacier blue (1404). While some of these shades are no longer available, suitable alternatives exist within the Léttlopi range to create a similar vibrant and playful look.
The Gersemi Kids sweater is a warm and breathable garment, perfect for outdoor adventures or cozy indoor wear. Léttlopi wool has the unique qualities of being both insulating and lightweight, keeping children warm without feeling heavy. The pattern features a ribbed neckline that can be folded for extra comfort and durability.
This design combines heritage Icelandic knitting traditions with a fun and modern twist, making it an ideal project for knitters who enjoy stranded colorwork. With its clear instructions and adaptable sizing, it is a rewarding knit that results in a timeless garment children will love to wear.
