Uddybende information

Jólapeysa is a classic Icelandic colourwork sweater pattern designed by Rakel from Lopamunstur (Knitter from Iceland). This bottom-up design is knitted in the round with Icewear Garn Saga Wool, a warm and durable Icelandic-style wool that comes in 50 g balls with a running length of 100 meters per 50 g. The Jólapeysa sweater features a timeless festive yoke with red as the main colour and white, green and yellow accents, perfect as a Christmas sweater or all-winter pullover. The pattern is worked on 4 mm and 5 mm circular needles (40 and 60/80 cm depending on size) plus 4 mm and 5 mm double-pointed needles for the sleeves and smaller circumferences. The recommended gauge is 18 stitches and 26 rows to 10 x 10 cm in stockinette on 5 mm needles, knitted in the round, which ensures the correct slim fit and slightly shorter body that characterises this design.

Jólapeysa is available in an extensive size range from XXS to 5XL, with detailed measurements for body width, body length, sleeve length and sleeve width so you can choose just the right fit. You use Color A as the main shade and smaller amounts of Colors B, C and D for the striking yoke pattern. Depending on size, you will need approximately 5–14 balls of Color A, 1–2 balls of Color B, and 1 ball each of Color C and Color D, all in Icewear Garn Saga Wool. The pattern explains how to knit the body and sleeves separately in the round, then join them for the yoke and follow the charted colourwork, with clear notes for how the chart changes between sizes. After the patterned yoke, the neckline is finished with a 1x1 rib on 4 mm needles for a cosy, slightly higher collar.

Finishing instructions include sewing the underarms, weaving in ends and blocking the sweater gently in lukewarm water for the best drape and stitch definition. Jólapeysa is ideal for knitters who enjoy traditional Icelandic sweaters and are comfortable working stranded colourwork in the round. With its rich red body, bright yoke and classic fit, this Lopamunstur design is a beautiful wardrobe staple as well as a perfect handmade Christmas sweater project.

Lidt om

Knitter from Iceland

I learned to knit at age 6 and fell in love right away. Over the years I’ve mostly focused on traditional Icelandic Wool sweaters (lopapeysa). After a burnout in 2023, knitting became my therapy. I couldn't decide which patterns to knit, so I decided to try and make my own. The process made me feel alive again, and that’s why I haven't stopped since. My inspiration comes from colors, nature, and even music or memories.
