The Nostra Sweater is a beautiful Icelandic sweater design by Rakel, Lopamunstur.is (Knitter from Iceland). This pattern brings together traditional Icelandic knitting heritage with a modern slim fit and shorter body length, making it perfect for layering or wearing on its own. The sweater is worked from the bottom up with both the body and sleeves knitted in the round before being joined together for the stunning colorwork yoke.
The design is knitted using Ístex Plötulopi, a classic unspun Icelandic wool, held double for extra warmth and durability. Each 100 g plate has 300 meters, which equals 150 meters per 50 g when held single. Since the yarn is held double throughout the project, you will achieve a thick, warm yet lightweight fabric, ideal for outdoor wear. The required gauge is 18 stitches and 26 rows = 10 x 10 cm on 5 mm needles, knitted in the round.
The pattern uses a striking color palette:
- Colour A: Frost Grass (main color)
- Colour B: White 0051
- Colour C: Black 0059
- Colour D: Dark Amber 1426
The sweater is available in an inclusive size range from XXS to 5XL, with body widths from 71 cm up to 140 cm, and sleeve lengths from 42 to 52 cm depending on size. This ensures that knitters can create a garment that fits perfectly, whether you prefer a slim fit or would like to size up for a more relaxed silhouette.
You will need both circular needles (4 mm and 5 mm, 40–80 cm depending on size) and double-pointed needles (4 mm and 5 mm) for sleeves and smaller circumference sections. The neckline is finished with a long ribbing in 1x1 rib stitch worked on 4 mm needles, which can either be left as is or folded over and sewn down for a double-layered collar.
The finishing process includes a gentle soak in lukewarm water with conditioner to soften the unspun wool, ensuring the sweater blooms beautifully and becomes even more comfortable to wear.
The Nostra Lopapeysa is a versatile and stylish knit, deeply rooted in Icelandic tradition yet with a fresh contemporary twist. Whether you are an experienced knitter familiar with colorwork or looking for a rewarding challenge, this pattern offers the perfect opportunity to create a cozy, timeless piece for your wardrobe.
