The sweater is worked bottom-up in the round on 4 mm and 5 mm circular and double-pointed needles, with a gauge of 18 sts x 26 rows = 10 cm. Sizes range from XS to XXL (body width 70–132 cm). Uddybende information

The Tafl sweater, designed by Knitter from Iceland/Lopamunstur, is a beautiful Icelandic lopapeysa with a timeless geometric yoke pattern. The design is knitted bottom-up in the round and features a slim fit and slightly shorter body length, making it both modern and traditional at the same time. If you prefer a looser fit, it is recommended to choose a larger size.

This pattern is worked in the well-known Icelandic yarn Ístex Léttlopi, which comes in 50 g skeins with a yardage of 100 m per skein. That equals 100 m per 50 g, or 200 m per 100 g. Léttlopi is spun from 100% Icelandic wool, making the sweater lightweight, warm, and breathable. The yarn is used in three colours: Light Grey (0056) as main colour, combined with Black (0059) and White (0051) for the striking yoke. Depending on size, the yarn requirements vary:

  • Colour A (Light Grey 0056): 5 (7) 9 (11) 13 skeins

  • Colour B (Black 0059): 2 (2) 3 (3) 3 skeins

  • Colour C (White 0051): 1 (2) 2 (2) 3 skeins

The sweater is knitted on circular needles 4 mm and 5 mm (40, 60, or 80 cm, depending on size) and double-pointed needles for sleeves. The recommended gauge is 18 stitches and 26 rows = 10 x 10 cm on 5 mm needles, knitted in the round. As the designer notes, she knits quite tightly, so you may need to adjust needle size to achieve the correct gauge.

The pattern includes five sizes (A–E) with the following approximate measurements:

  • Body width: 70 / 85.5 / 101 / 116.5 / 132 cm

  • Body length: 32 / 36 / 40 / 43 / 46 cm

  • Sleeve length: 44 / 47 / 49 / 51 / 52 cm

Construction begins with the ribbed hem and sleeves, both worked separately, before joining them together for the colourwork yoke. The neckline is finished with a folded rib collar for comfort and style. Finally, underarms are sewn together, and the sweater is blocked for the perfect fit.

This design is a perfect project for knitters who love traditional Icelandic sweaters with modern details. The warm yet lightweight Léttlopi yarn ensures that your Tafl sweater will be both practical and stylish for years to come.

Lidt om

Knitter from Iceland

I learned to knit at age 6 and fell in love right away. Over the years I’ve mostly focused on traditional Icelandic Wool sweaters (lopapeysa). After a burnout in 2023, knitting became my therapy. I couldn't decide which patterns to knit, so I decided to try and make my own. The process made me feel alive again, and that’s why I haven't stopped since. My inspiration comes from colors, nature, and even music or memories.
