Uddybende information
Virginia Top is a light and feminine summer top designed by Miriam Walchshäusl, also known as Mrs Funny Valentine. Inspired by the words and spirit of Virginia Woolf, this design invites calm, self-acceptance, and softness. Virginia Top is created as a mindful knitting project with elegant details and a flattering silhouette that feels as beautiful to wear as it does to knit.
The Virginia Top is worked seamlessly from the top down. Construction begins with the lace panel at the center back, which forms a delicate triangular shape and provides structural support for the two shoulder straps. From there, the front bust sections and straps are worked separately before joining all parts to knit the body in the round. The top features a gently fitted bust with negative ease and an A-line body that flares softly over the hips, creating comfort and movement.
A defining design feature is the refined lace panel at the back, which adds visual interest without compromising wearability. Slim I-cord edges frame the neckline and run subtly toward the side seams, which are slightly shifted forward to create a slimmer appearance at the front. The hem can be finished with either a clean I-cord edge or a delicate crochet lace trim, allowing knitters to personalize the final look.
Virginia Top is knit using Quince & Co Willet, a sport to light DK weight yarn made from 100% cotton. The yarn has a yardage of 146 meters per 50 grams, equivalent to 2.92 meters per gram. The breathable cotton yarn makes this top ideal for warm weather and ensures crisp stitch definition, especially in the lace panel. Optionally, a lace-weight silk mohair yarn can be held for the crochet trim for added softness and contrast.
The recommended needle sizes are 3.0 mm and 3.5 mm, or the sizes needed to achieve gauge. The blocked gauge is 22.5 stitches and 31 rows over 10 cm in stockinette stitch using the larger needles.
Virginia Top is available in women’s sizes XS through 3XL. The bust is designed with approximately 5–8 cm of negative ease, while the hem includes positive ease for a relaxed and comfortable fit. Length can be easily adjusted to suit individual preference.
This pattern is suited for intermediate knitters who enjoy lace details, thoughtful construction, and elegant summer garments. Virginia Top is a timeless design with a quiet strength and refined beauty.
