Uddybende information

Virgo Sweater is a beautiful Icelandic sweater designed by Rakel from Knitter from Iceland. This design is part of the Zodiac Lopapeysa series and is inspired by the Virgo star sign, carrying both traditional and modern elements in its colourwork yoke. The sweater is worked in the round from the bottom up, combining the body and sleeves before the intricate yoke is knitted. It is a slim fit design with a slightly shorter body length, though knitters can adjust size and fit according to preference.

The pattern is knitted using Ístex Léttlopi, a classic Icelandic yarn spun from pure new wool. Each 50 g skein of Léttlopi measures 100 m, giving a running length of 200 m per 100 g. For this sweater, the designer uses three shades: Colour A Beige (1418), Colour B Pine Green (1407) and Colour C Mimosa (1703). Depending on the chosen size, yarn amounts vary from 6 to 12 skeins in the main colour and 1 to 3 skeins in the contrasting colours.

The sweater is available in a wide size range from XXS to 5XL, making it accessible for many body shapes. Body width spans from 71 cm in the smallest size to 140 cm in the largest, while body length ranges between 30 cm and 46 cm from hem to underarm. Sleeve lengths vary between 42 cm and 52 cm, depending on size.

The design is worked on circular needles size 4 mm and 5 mm, with corresponding double-pointed needles for the sleeves. The recommended gauge is 18 stitches and 26 rows over 10 x 10 cm on 5 mm needles, knitted in the round. Since the designer knits tightly, knitters may need to use 4.5 mm or even 4 mm needles to achieve the correct tension.

This lopapeysa captures the essence of Icelandic knitting, highlighting durability, warmth and timeless design. The wool provides excellent insulation, while remaining light and breathable. The Virgo yoke pattern is charted and varies slightly according to size, ensuring a well-proportioned design across all sizes. Once finished, the sweater is completed with a ribbed neckline that can either be folded and sewn down or left as a high collar, offering two different style options.

With its symbolic inspiration, traditional craftsmanship, and practical wearability, the Virgo Lopapeysa is a versatile and meaningful project. Perfect for knitters who enjoy Icelandic wool and authentic lopapeysa construction, this design combines modern aesthetics with cultural tradition.

Lidt om

Knitter from Iceland

I learned to knit at age 6 and fell in love right away. Over the years I’ve mostly focused on traditional Icelandic Wool sweaters (lopapeysa). After a burnout in 2023, knitting became my therapy. I couldn't decide which patterns to knit, so I decided to try and make my own. The process made me feel alive again, and that’s why I haven't stopped since. My inspiration comes from colors, nature, and even music or memories.
