Sitkagreni Kids Sweater is a timeless Icelandic design created by Rakel from Lopamunstur, also known as Knitter from Iceland. Inspired by the beauty of Icelandic nature, this children’s lopapeysa is worked seamlessly from the bottom up with classic round yoke construction. Both the body and sleeves are knitted in the round before being joined together for the striking colourwork yoke. The pattern includes clear charts that vary slightly depending on the size, ensuring a perfect fit for all ages.
The design is made using Icewear Saga wool, a 100% Icelandic wool yarn spun in 50 g skeins with a running length of 100 m. As an alternative, the pattern also recommends Istex Léttlopi, which has the same weight and structure, making it a versatile option for knitters outside Iceland. With 100 m per 50 g skein, the running length per 50 g is exactly 100 m, making it easy to calculate the amount needed. The recommended yarn gauge is 18 stitches and 26 rows over 10 cm on 5 mm needles, giving the sweater the right balance of warmth, structure, and softness. The ribbing is worked on 4 mm needles to provide a snug finish at cuffs, hem, and neckline.
The Sitkagreni kids sweater is available in a wide range of children’s sizes: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 years. This makes it possible to knit matching sweaters for siblings or even a set that grows with your child. Depending on the chosen size, you will need between 4 to 7 skeins of the main colour and 1 to 2 skeins of the contrast colour. The sample uses Peach 2109 as Color A and Coffee 9066 as Color B, but knitters are free to choose their own shades for a unique result.
The design captures the spirit of the Icelandic lopapeysa, making it both practical and beautiful. The sweater is warm yet breathable thanks to the natural qualities of Icelandic wool, making it ideal for outdoor play. The pattern also includes finishing instructions, such as how to block the sweater and sew underarms neatly.
With Sitkagreni kids, you get a traditional Icelandic design reimagined for children, combining heritage with comfort and style. This pattern is perfect for knitters who enjoy colourwork and want to create a garment that is both durable and charming.
